How people use Pictures: An annotated bibliography

Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm

Author

Sarah Murray Bradley

Synopsis

Visual literacy is a characteristic all human beings inherently possess. Yet because of our cultural and social differences, we interpret visual symbols and representations, such as drawings, pictures, and artefacts, in different ways. How and why people use visual images to represent complex ideas and processes is the focus of How People use Pictures. It is the first comprehensive review of the literature on visual literacy in over a decade, and offers new insights into this complicated issue. Written for practitioners interested in communicating with local people using pictures and visual symbols and for researchers interested in gaining a deeper appreciation of the 'language of the visual' , this book provides detailed annotations of over 100 key references, as well as an extensive list of useful institutions and resources. This book was reprinted in 1997 and contains a new forward written by Bob Linney, outlining recent developments in visual literacy

Author

Development Education Association

Synopsis

This publication is one of the principal outcomes of a joint action research project of the DEA and the Department for International Development (DFID) on how NGOs and other development education practitioners consider measuring the effectiveness and impact of their programmes. The online Users' Guide offers practical documents and methods to support evaluation as well as further details about the project's pilot initiatives.

Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm

Author

Annabel Jackson

Synopsis

This research project looks at the actual and potential contribution of the voluntary arts to the UK government's social exclusion agenda. Illustrated through 14 case studies from around the UK the aim of the research was to provide guidance as to the tools and training which may be needed by volunteer-led groups to enable them to fulfil their potential as agencies which address social exclusion. Another aim was to identify existing resources which could be more widely used, or detail the need for new forms of support.
