Synopsis

The New Tactics Workbook New Tactics in Human Rights: A Resource for Practitioners In the past two decades the world has seen the beginning of a new era for human rights, one in which the weight of international law and international public opinion has come increasingly to bear. In the arena of international law, new mechanisms have transformed the way we think about and achieve justice. And at the same time, the creative thinking and innovative spirit of individuals and organizations have changed the way we think about what is possible in human rights — and therefore what we can achieve. All around the world and at all levels, in small villages and in national governments as well as at the highest levels of international justice, people are creating and using innovative tactics to make their work more effective. The New Tactics in Human Rights Project captures these tactical innovations and shares them with others striving to advance human rights. I invite you to join me in celebrating this work and in making use of the valuable resource you now hold in your hands.

How people use Pictures: An annotated bibliography

Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm

Author

Sarah Murray Bradley

Synopsis

Visual literacy is a characteristic all human beings inherently possess. Yet because of our cultural and social differences, we interpret visual symbols and representations, such as drawings, pictures, and artefacts, in different ways. How and why people use visual images to represent complex ideas and processes is the focus of How People use Pictures. It is the first comprehensive review of the literature on visual literacy in over a decade, and offers new insights into this complicated issue. Written for practitioners interested in communicating with local people using pictures and visual symbols and for researchers interested in gaining a deeper appreciation of the 'language of the visual' , this book provides detailed annotations of over 100 key references, as well as an extensive list of useful institutions and resources. This book was reprinted in 1997 and contains a new forward written by Bob Linney, outlining recent developments in visual literacy

Synopsis

The Centre's resource library contains over 3000 titles on the subject of arts and education, arts and health, community development and urban regeneration. Besides British, American and European texts, a section of the library is exclusively dedicated to reports, case studies and literature published by a wide range of cultural organisations at a regional, national and international level, which provides users with an up-to-date overview of any developments currently taking place in the fields of cultural policy, arts and education, urban renewal and community development. In addition, the library regularly receives a number of periodicals, newsletters and magazines making it an invaluable reference and research source for practitioners within the above mentioned fields. Its holdings are constantly being updated and the library is currently undergoing restructuring, the result of which will be a much improved, quick reference database for ease of use.
