The Beat Within
Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm
Synopsis
In addition to their website, they publish two weekly Beats ranging from 40 to 100 pages plus an eight page Beat Monthly. The Beat Within is a publication of the writings and art from Juvenile Halls and beyond, published by Pacific News Service, a San Francisco non-profit organization. The first publication of The Beat Within came out in late September of 1996. In addition, the back pages of The Beat Within contain The Beat Without. These important contributions come from people from all over the United States, most of whom are in the system, from death row to county jail to various youth facilities, as well as some of who are now in the free world. Beat contributors are in a unique position to express themselves and realize that they are not alone; through their writings and art, they discover that they are a part of a larger community. Furthermore, their voices, through The Beat Within publication, reach, touch, and hopefully influence the lives of judges, probation officers, families, community workers, youth, and many others. The purpose is to educate themselves as well as readers inside and outside of the system, and writers are encouraged to think as teachers as they reflect on their pasts and look ahead.

At the Desert's Edge: Oral histories from the Sahel
Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm
Synopsis
This book explores the culture, history and environment of the Sahel through the memories and recollections of its people. The region is characterised by low rainfall and poor soils, yet some 60 million people mange to make a living from the land. At the Desert’s Edge draws on interviews conducted with hundreds of men and women from eight Sahelian countries, who have been living through a time of unprecedented social and environmental change. A fascinating blend of stories, anecdotes, information and opinion, it is also a moving testimony to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Sahelian people.

Voices From the Mountain Series
Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm
Synopsis
Each collection in the Voices of the Mountain series contains a fascinating blend of anecdote, information, history, culture, knowledge, opinion and experience with all the contradictions this may imply. These are the individual voices of the ordinary people on whose actions development depends. And they are at the heart of one of the key challenges of the next decade - how to meet national development needs without further marginalising mountain peoples. As the pace of development accelerates in mountain regions, so the social and physical environment is changing. Yet the demand for mountain riches - timber, minerals, water, tourism facilities - is more often driven by urban, lowland populations and industry than by highland communities. Mountain people are the custodians of diverse sometimes unique environments, essential to the survival of the global ecosystem. Further erosion of their ability to care for those assets will be the worlds loss, not just theirs. Panos has been working with community-based environmental, cultural and development organisations in select highland areas, training local people to record interviews on a range of issues, in order to communicate their personal experiences and understanding of the challenges ahead. The result is a wealth of material - vivid, challenging, full of human detail and variety. Voices From the Mountain Series: Oral Testimonies from Cerro de Pasco, Peru. Oral Testimonies from southwest and northeast China. Oral Testimonies from Wollo, Ethiopia. Oral Testimonies from the Lesotho Highlands. Oral Testimonies from Mount Elgon, Kenya . Oral Testimonies from the Sudety mountains, Poland. Oral Testimonies from the Himalaya (India and Nepal); the Karakorum (Pakistan); and the Sierra Norte (Mexico). Collections are published in A5-sized booklets, maps, photos, index, glossary.

Arms to Fight, Arms to Protect: women speak out about conflict
Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm
Synopsis
While the impacts of armed conflict the world over have a shocking familiarity – death, disability, rape, displacement, family separation and economic destruction – women’s experiences are not uniform. These testimonies reveal the views and experiences of women as fighters, participants, refugees, victims caught between warring factions, organisers for peace and rehabilitation, carers, and mothers, relatives and partners of the dead and disappeared. Women from four continents speak of how they have dealt with the psychological and physical damage of war, and with economic survival.

We Are Here Because…
Submitted by admin on 28 October 2006 - 11:52pm
Synopsis
We Are Here Because… is designed to help focus the current debate by providing first hand information on the issues. It is the first and only educational CD-ROM dealing with immigration and asylum - one of the most burning subjects today. Together with video and audio interviews with asylum seekers themselves, expert witnesses provide the context for why people need to flee from economic and political conditions caused by globalisation. Two further sections explain the basic concepts necessary to understand the issues, and how to set up campaigns to support asylum seekers. All this is rounded off with further reading sources, web links, a dynamic original soundtrack and plentiful images and photographs. This CD-ROM has been designed for GCSE level students and above. It can also be used to support the work of campaigning groups and asylum seekers' support groups, and in other informal and community settings. It is intended as an introduction to the issues. It will suit teachers at secondary level looking for material for citizenship classes, development educationalists, campaigning groups, and asylum seeker and refugee support groups who wish to affirm the struggles and experiences of asylum seekers and refugees everywhere.
