Project Focus

SPWÕs vision is to harness the energy and enthusiasm of trained young volunteers to implement peer-led educational programs, which tackle social and health issues (Specifically HIV/AIDS) facing young people in communities in Africa and Asia. The objectives of SPW Zambia and Schools HIV and AIDS Education Programme are: To create behavioural change among young people in Zambia through awareness raising of Adolescence Sexual Reproductive Health (ASRH) issues and development of life skills; To develop and promote a sustainable model for school based HIV/AIDS prevention which utilises the huge untapped resource of young Zambians living school for further education; To build capacity with in the Ministry of Education to run this type of programme at a national, provincial and district level.

Project Activities

Training of volunteers, Life skill module added to the curriculum including: Quizzes, debates, role plays, events, festivals, AIDS awareness clubs, Drama, Choir , Dance Poetry; Extra Curricular Activities like: AIDS awareness clubs, sports, expressive performing arts and youth clubs; Awareness raising events and festivals.

Outcomes

Individual Impacts: 40 young people 50% of whom are female are completing their SPW placements . They have developed enormously in confidence and skills and have a commitment to helping others. Family Group Impacts: Community Impacts: There are on average 600 students per school. Across the 60 SPW schools. Volunteers are in direct contact with at least 36,000 students, who in turn will build awareness among their own family and friends.Other Impacts: The volunteers have rejuvenated clubs and sports at the schools-ensuring that 60 AIDS Awareness clubs are 'truly' active. 60 YRCÕs have been set up, this ensures that all the 30,000 students have access to youth friendly literature.
