Project Focus

The project targeted building awareness on HIV /AIDS among truckers and port workers in Khidderpore and Haldia ports in West Bengal, promoting safe sexual practices and mobilising behaviour change so that target groups avail of services at VCTC centres. The project also entailed building capacities of resource groups on theatre based communication methodology in Paradip, Kochi, Tuticorin, Goa, Vaizag. In Haldia and Kidderpore target groups were primarily port workers and truckers. in other five ports target groups also included central Indian Security Forces (guards), CWSs, MSM (Homosexual), local fishing communities and industrial labourers besides truckers and port workers.

Street theatre shows performances with changes in message plans every two months and audience interactions.

Outcomes

Individual Impacts: Family Group Impacts: Community Impacts: In a survey conducted by PSI, it was found that awareness level has increased from 28% to 72% in these areas. Other Impacts: Lessons Learned: Problems Encountered: Beneficiary Comments: Stakeholder Comments: The campaign team worked along with inter personal communicators (IPCs) of PSI. The PSI interacted with the audience after the show, distributed condoms, demonstrated correct usage and held discussions on key messages disseminated by the play.
