Organisation

International HIV/AIDS Alliance

Project Focus

The workshop will provide a context in which cultural knowledge and experience of HIV/AIDS is privileged in the development of health promotion and advocacy strategies. The intervention is a component of the International HIV/AIDS AllianceÕs ÔÕFrontiers Prevent ProjectÕÕ (FPP). The aim of FPP is to target HIV/ AIDS prevention in countries with low sero-prevalence. The programme addresses populations who are most affected by and vulnerable to HIV, sex workers, men who have sex with men, many of whom are living with HIV. The aim of the ÔProducing HIV Prevention MessagesÕ workshop is to promote dialogue amongst participants, all of whom came from target populations.

Background

Target Groups/Participants

Project Activities

Project activities include a workshop which will provide a context in which cultural knowledge and experience of HIV/AIDS is privileged in the development of health advocacy strategies. The intervention builds on technical support training that has taken place with people from these population groups over the last 2 years. And from the Ôproducing HIV Prevention MessagesÕ workshop the focus of the work will be on developing perfomances, poster presentations, flip-charts, condom packages and radio programmes, each addressing a key theme such as gender and sexuality, HIV/ sexual health awareness, stigma and violence etc.

Outcomes

Individual Impacts: Family Group Impacts: Community Impacts: Other Impacts: Learning and exchange about issues such as sexuality, outreach skills and safe sex. Developing and practicing technological, IT, advocacy, analytical skills. Empowerment of participants and team building through group participation and control. Lessons Learned: Problems Encountered: Having all the technology and art materials in place and skills to use them. One of the difficulties is often explaining to people from out side the cultural group (e.g government donors) why a particular approach has been taken or why a particular resource has been produced. Some times individuals or groups are not comfortable with particular workshop methods and this needs to be addressed on the spot which can also be challenging.
